A few months ago getting together with a group of people to run halfway across England in the middle of winter seemed like a great idea. To help fill some of the time until things like that can happen again, here’s me talking about that experience. A lot.

John Kelly is the 15th man in history to finish all 5 loops of the infamous “100 mile” Barkley Marathons within the time limit. He is also the winner of this year’s 268 mile Montane Spine race, where he also set a new Men’s course record, beating his nearest competitor by around 2 hours.

The notorious 268-mile (430km) Montane Spine Race started on Sunday 12 January 2020 at 8am. Competitors had seven days in which to complete the whole Pennine Way, resting when, and if, they needed to. This year, Storm Brendan’s 80mph winds left some entrants navigating in the dark on their hands and knees.

Last week, US ultrarunner John Kelly won the Spine Race, a 268-mile run along the Pennine Way in the depths of the British winter. Kelly, who’s also one of a select group of individuals to have completed the Barkley Marathons in Tennessee, ran from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yeltolm in the Scottish Borders.

Late last Wednesday night, January 15, John Kelly, 36, of Morgan County, Tennessee, was the first to finish the 2020 edition of the UK’s Spine Race, after battling Storm Brendan for three days. He kissed the finish line wall in Kirk Yetholm as per tradition, and collapsed, saying simply, “Everything hurts.”
